La religion est l'ensemble des lois qui règlent ces actions et ces réactions sociales. Naturellement ces lois seront conçues à l'image de celles qui régissent les rapports des hommes entre eux. Pour s'assurer la protection et l'amitié de ces puissances redoutables, l'homme emploiera les mêmes moyens dont il use dans les mêmes occasions avec ses semblables : prières, offrandes, marques de soumission, etc. La religion est donc une sociologie, mais qui est sortie tout entière de l'imagination humaine ; elle résulte d'un raisonnement par analogie. D'autre part, comme elle a été inventée pour expliquer l'univers, on peut définir la religion « une explication sociologique universelle à forme mythique ».
