The argument is just as absurd as that of the Guelfs and Ghibellines, since society is in fact neither a machine nor a tree. With the Renaissance, we come to a new influence, the influence of literature, especially classical literature. This continues to our own day, more particularly among those who go to the public schools and the older universities. When Professor Gilbert Murray has to make up his mind on a political question, one feels that his first reaction is to ask himself, 'What would Euripides have said about it?'
