- واژهنامه · French & English to Persian Epistemological Dictionary allhallowmas eng. allhallowmas Definition 1: The feast of All Saints Day or All Saints Day itself(November 1), the day in which all saints are honored in the Catholic Church. Usage 1: Hallowe'en ("Hallowed evening") began as the eve of the festival of the Celtic god, Samhain, the god of the dead. It was the Celtic harvest festival, marking not only the end of summer but the beginning of the new year. The Celts apparently believed Samhain allowed dead spirits out of the fairy world where they dwelt on the evening before this celebration. Suggested usage: During the Roman conquest of England, the Roman autumn festival of Feralia, held in October also to honor the dead, was combined with the Celtic festival of Samhain. The Catholic All Saint's day was originally celebrated in the spring but was changed to November 1 by Pope Gregory III in 700 AD to attract Celtic converts. The result was a mixture of Celtic, Christian, and Roman traditions that we have inherited.
