- واژهنامه · French & English to Persian Epistemological Dictionary wig Etymology: The history of today's word is a showcase of linguistic processes. First, "Wig" is a CLIPPING of "periwig" but then "periwig" is a FOLK ETYMOLOGY of "peruke" ("wig" originally referred to a kind of bun and "peri" is found in "periwinkle"). "Peruke" is from French perruque which meant, in Old French, "head of hair," taken from Old Italian perrucca. Most etymologists agree that it somehow goes back to Latin pilus "hair" (whence our depilatory "hair-remover") but with an odd switch of the [l] to [r] somewhere sometime in Italy. mu/gisu ye sâxtagi kolâh-gis
