The root is a metathesized form (ra-) of *ar- "to fit together." Without metathesis but with the suffix -m we find it in Greek harmos "joint, shoulder" whence English "harmony." Suffixed with -t, it emerges in "art," "artist," and the enemy of the artist, "inertia," from Latin ars, artis "art, skill, craft." Latin artus "tight" is another variation, this one underlying "article" and "articulate."
